Earl Grey Tea Is Very Well Symbolized In Popular Culture
There's a certain mystique about Earl Grey tea. It's distinctive flavor and colorful, mystery shrouded origins make up a fine story, and it's often the best known of all English teas, and possibly the most widely known tea, period.
Continued references to the blend in popular culture (generally, music, movies, television, and books), have only reinforced the image, and made the drink all the more recognized than ever. You don't really need to look far to find references to the Earl Grey tea blend, for example:
Probably the most popular character in American television to drink the tea usually is none other than Captain Jean Luc Picard, of the USS Enterprise (Star Trek, the Next Generation), but it doesn't stop there. In an episode of Star Trek series, "Deep Space Nine" there's a mention of "That Earl Grey fellow," and explaining him a thing or two about tea leaves, so Earl Grey in the Star Trek universe is very well represented actually!
The good Captain is not alone, though. Artimis Fowl (from the novels bearing his name) has quite a fondness for the thing, as does Sir Leigh Teabing, from the book "The DaVinci Code." Next of course John Locke from the TV show "Lost" who asks opponent Benjamin Linus for a cup of that tea, and the character of Hyacinth Bucket from the British sitcom "Keeping up Appearances," drinks the blend in a number of episodes.
And let's not skip animation! In the anime series Black Butler, the key figure Ciel Phantomhive drinks Earl Grey tea on numerous occasions, and the stuff is basically part of the story line in a number of ways.
Music as well, finds quite a lot of references, ranging from Weird Al Yankovic's "White and Nerdy" song, to Dada's song on their self titled 1997 album known as "The Ballad of Earl Grey and Chamomile." You'll also see a chapter called "Earl Grey" in Garrison Keillor's "The Book of Guys," and if you're interested in playing video games, and probably be playing a game called the "Steamboat Chronicles," then your default Mech in the game is the Earl Grey II, and this all just scratches the surface.
