Dual Processor Motherboard Will Make Your Computer Fly: But, Do You Truly Want It?

You have heard that there is such a thing as a dual processor motherboard. You've also heard the term dual-core processors. Are they the same or different? Can they be used separately or together? And why would you want them, anyway?

A motherboard (otherwise known as system, main or logic board) is what holds everything in place on a computer, and enables everything play nice together. It houses the CPU (normally), RAM, video cards, peripherals and more. Every bit of computer juice flows through it. The typical motherboard has a single processor. A dual processor motherboard has two CPUs - not surprising there.

Likewise, there are CPUs that have just one core, others dual, and even up to eight cores. (And probably even more are available, just not in the mainstream.) For many, many years, the processors were single, and could handle a job at a time. It looked like more, but that was appearance; behind the curtain, it was busily swapping jobs out and in. When the dual core processor hit the scene some years ago, their claim to fame was the ability to handle twice the computing load, as they each had their own processing core. Kind of like two people can get the task faster than one person working alone.

There're people who need the souped-up speed of a dual processor motherboard multi core Central processing unit. It can certainly be an incredible combination! However, all this power comes at a price - literally, since they're quite expensive. Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $450 for a mid-priced dual processor motherboard. Then you need to buy 2 CPUs! Add in RAM, a video card, miscellaneous peripherals and you are well past $2000. This kind of power and cost would be wasted on the normal user. However, if you're honestly into gaming or need multiple complex apps running all at once, do consider a dual processor system board.
